The difference is the bypass not anti drain back valve. Both do have the flap type anti drain back valve on top. If you look at the oil filter adapter on most in VW line you will see a ball. The ball is held in place by a spring. This is the bypass valve. The Water boxer does not have this so it has to be in the filter. Most after market filter companies incorporate this feature. That is why most aftermarket uses the same filter number for both applications.

This has been resolved before, right here on this list. The short answer is that the 719/5 should NOT be used on a Vanagon - the 719/12 should be.

Both Mann and Mahle make a dedicated Vanagon filter (the 719/12, and the OC108, respectively), and a Golf/Jetta filter (the 719/5 and OC47). The question of whether the Golf/Jetta filter (either the Mahle or Mann version; they're essentially the same) can safely be used on a Vanagon comes up here every few years. Several years ago, a list member took the question directly to Mahle in Germany, who along with Mann are the original suppliers of the Vanagon filter and work closely with Volkswagen. They were kind enough to answer:

The main difference between OC 108 and OC 47 is inside these filters. OC 108 has an anti-dran valve at the filter, OC 47 not. When you use OC 47 for your car (VW Tranporter/Vanagon) than you can get problems, when you start your car. The motor is at this time always to long without oil. OC 108 have also a better paper quality than OC 47, and the pressure bypass is different. Please use for your car OC 108, to get no damage at your car or motor.

So there you have it. The correct OEM Vanagon filter (Mann 719/12 or Mahle OC108) is not hard to get. We sell them for $4.29 each at the following link:

For all of four bucks, why take a chance on something that even MIGHT affect your engine's lifespan? Even if you don't do your own oil changes, just keep a couple of filters in the garage, and if your local mechanic wants to use a Golf filter hand him one of these instead. This seems like a no-brainer to me.
