You (we?) might want to look into mharc/MHonArc ( http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/mhonarc/ ) It does a pretty good job of archiving and searching emails (at least on a recent processor).

Google is good for a first approximation - but for some reason, it doesn't index all the archives.
