Hi Ben.

On OBD1, I know a failed RPM sensor (aka engine speed sensor) will cause a no start.

Possibly a failed knock or CMP (cam shaft position sensor) sensor will do this too, but I"ll have to bust open my Jetta Bentley to verify.
