It's a four-digit number, stamped on one of the "tines" of the two pronged fork shaped thingy that sticks into the door from the door handle. If you go to a locksmith, it's a good idea to bring the door handle with you so you can test the key. Other useful information is that the code is found in the VW "N series", i.e. he should look for "N5678" in the code books.
