How about sewing the rips with that hi tech kevlar kite string(not available at Wal Mart, but maybe at a hobby store). Then cover as you see fit.. I tried flossing with kevlar strands once.....repeat once. You don't have to worry about it breaking in between tight teeth, and when you pull it out of your mouth and it's still that yellow color, it can really gross out others in the bathroom. It doesn't come in "minty fresh" however.
