This was the right tip.  The problem seems to be fixed, and all I did was
remove the exterior vent, bent the pipes so that they were naturally very
close to being in the right position, and reassembled.  (I also straightened
a slight bend in the metal plate that separates the exhaust side from the
intake side).  I didn't have to remove the fridge again!
