Thanks to those who contributed to the solution of my vanagon's lights pulsing when the 1990 Carat was running.

Dennis and Joel were both right, inasmuch as they pointed to various parts of the alternator. Today I replaced the alternator, and all is well. It even runs better. I suppose the varying voltage was giving the computer some problems.
