it's true, on a gasoline fuel injected vanagon ................you must be
talking about an air-cooled 82 vanagon I would imagine ........
if you add resistance to the wire connected to the temp sensor for the
ECU........
that will trick into running richer.
and if it runs richer, it might run cooler.
BUT........a big but.............warmer is better. Unless you are pushing
huge long grades with big loads on very high temp days,, and your oil
temperature is at dangerous levels............you're fine.
And if that was the case, too high oil temps , then perhaps an auxiliary oil
cooler.
Does very high cylinder head temps hurt or shorten the life of air-cooled
Type IV engines in Vanagons ?
I suppose so. They're plenty weak as it is...........so on that score, sure
.........you might try adding a simple resistor in series, just one ........
to the temp sensor for the ecu, located on the left cylinder head.
And get some way to measure temps so you can tell if it's doing any good or
not.
A simple infra red temp gun aimed at a head.............after a standard
known run ........one you do all the time............sure, try that.
But I think you are chasing after a problem that doesn't really
exist..........or one not truly addressed with some 'patch' add-on.
The bigger issue is just the limitations of what you have to work with
.......an air-cooled VW engine. They are what they are, and some things can
be done to help them some, yes. Good luck !~
