A friend and I R&R'd me tank a few weeks ago and I'll second the motion to not fully install the tank before seating the crossover completely. Of course I can't vouch for how easy it is 'cause we didn't. We spent about 15 minutes or more trying to seat the last crossover wye and it only went in with lubricant. That may be another important step. Lubricating the grommets with something (which won't adversely affect the grommet's performance).

I did use Jeff's method (placing all the pieces as close together as possible before actually installing) a couple weeks ago with me propane tank. Used no jack for the vehicle and just the rear heater cover as a tank support. I wrestled and wrestled until I discovered if I threaded the two rear nuts onto their bolts and hung/rested the mounting bracket on them, I could easily thread the front nuts with the tank in place. Duh.

I'll have to admit, if this were a GMC van the bracket woulda had holes vice slots, and you couldn'a done that trick! OK, OK, the Vanagon is superior to Vandura, in one respect.
