You are dealing with 2 problems in the stock location.

Depth of the speaker inside the door. And Height of the speaker above the door panel.

Anything more than flush mounted speakers, will hit the side of the dash. Anything more than about 2 1/2 inches deep, will require you to cut the vapor barrier pocket.

With that said, a previous owner did fit some 5 or 5 1/2 inch speaker in my passenger syncro. As they aren't flush mounted they hit the dash. I wish they had gotten MB Quarts and flush mounted them instead.
