Subject: Auxillary driving lights: work wonderfully
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252"

Yesterday, I had a chance to need my extra lights. About a month ago, I queried on how to arrange the wiring, and 'we' got it right.

I bought a Vanagon-specific aux. light switch (it went into my '84 dash panel below the emergency flasher switch on the right of the speedo in a convenient 'blank' spot) from one of our friendly vendors. With the help of some patient listees, I wired it into the system so that this switch takes power from the high beam circuit of the headlights. I *think* I tapped into the high beam indicator light supply wire. The aux. light switch controls a relay which puts power (direct (fused) from my extra coach battery into a pair of KC Daylighter lights that I mounted by drilling through the bumper. One below each headlight..so I look just like a 'modern' SUV coming at you, with four front lights.

When you turn the switch of the extra lights ON, they are linked to the headlight high beams. No high beams, no driving lights. So driving along, you dim your lights normally and the very bright extra lights go out with the highbeams. Or you can turn off the switch and have just your normal headlights, without the extra lighting involved at all.

Yesterday morning, I left home at O-dark thirty, headed south towards Bend, Oregon (another bicycle race) on some smaller deer infested state highways and having those extra bright lights was great. I also avoided some fallen rocks (the O-D.O.T. guys don't get up too early, I guess) right in the center of a tunnel. Having the added light and having them 'automatic' to the dimmer stalk is super..
