Lessons of The Road
by Alfred E. Lord Tennisbum
Oh, the lessons i've learned,
on the Road as it's turned,
Are many and varied, for sure.
And I thought that, perhaps,
I would share with you chaps,
What I've learned on my Life's long detour.
I've found through the years,
as I shifted the gears
And stomped on the clutch til it's hurting,
That no matter how far
i would drive in the car,
A few things were always for certain ...
*1. No matter how fast, you will always get passed
By someone whose hurry is greater.
And "hurry" still rhymes, at least most of the times,
With "worry". Now, what could be straighter?
No matter how slow that you think you can go,
There's always some poke who is slower.
And the common refrain is that he's in YOUR lane,
And there's no way around him but over!
*2. An inescapable fact I'll relate with some tact,
To let you in on a theory -
One car at a time, no matter the clime,
Is all you can drive ... ain't that dreary?
It's so sad but it's true, for me and for you,
No matter how much we dispute it,
This one car, our own, and that car alone ...
No yelling or gestures refute it.
*3. A fact oft ignored, as you drive in the horde -
There are many more out there than just you.
So it's well worth your while to tailor your style
Of driving to suit what they do.
Which means to watch out for each stupid lout ...
Let "Defense!" be always your credo ...
For they all are quite blind, and not much inclined
To see you or your car or their speedo.
*4. The fuel you consume takes up little room
And really is not very heavy,
Yet some folks obsess, to the point of high stress,
That the fuel on a trip is a levy.
To them, it's a reason to put off the season
Of travel and camping and smiles.
But a Trip of your Life is worth more than strife
Over dollars and gallons and miles.
*5. The place that you go, no matter how slow,
Is a Result ... of the Trip that you're after,
But The Trip, on its own, will always have grown
Into Memories, hopefully Laughter.
And these memories last, as they fade into Past,
And, although this is just speculation,
Your Trip, you will find, unless you are blind,
Is more important than your Destination.
