Hey Jim,

I wouldn't be too afraid that modern CD players will clash with the Vanagon interior. My '86 Westy has a Kenwood (kdc-132) CD player in it and I don't think it looks tacky/clashes. I attached a picture of my CD player in the dash so you be the judge.

One big thing I have found with VW vans (more so the bay windows than Vanagons but whatever) is that having a "modest" CD player draws less attention to it. If you have a CD player with a lot of light shining at you, you would be more inclined to look down or be distracted by lights on your dash and taking your focus away from the road.

So, if I were you, I would research the brands you prefer and look for a model with your needs (aux input, etc) that isn't very bright or shinny. Typically, I don't think sliver or black CD player faces really clash with any car dash and the Vanagon is no exception. If you are really concerned about colors, look for a CD player with a black face plate - your vent controls are already black so a black cd player would match that.

Andrew
