The AFM is the Air Flow Meter and is between the intake air filter and the rubber "S" boot that attaches to the throttle body.

Yes ... a bad ignition switch will allow cranking without supplying spark or fuel.

The ignition switch has multiple contacts and one of the failure modes is to allow cranking (key turned all the way to the right) ... but opening the contacts for "Ignition on". When the key is simply in the ignition on position (not all the way to the right for cranking) the ignition on contacts "Make" again. Sometimes, but not always, just gently turning the key until the starter engages (not turning the key hard to the right) will allow the switch to function properly.
