Jim, do you hear the fuel pump running briefly every time the key is turned on? Not all the way to start, just on? If pump runs, the distributor is a reasonable bet. If you don't hear the fuel pump run for 1-2 seconds every time you turn the key on it is NOT the distributor at fault.

Used working dizzys often sell on Ebay for about $50.
