Jim,
O2 sensor does make sense. I had the same thing happen on two different
Vanagons (one of them was Karl Wolz's). We did some work totally unrelated
to the O2 sensor and the Vanagon started running like crap on the test
drive. Unplugged the O2 sensor, and they ran great.
The good news is that Bosch O2 sensors for the Vanagon have dropped in price
recently. Those bad boys used to be $125+, now they sell for less than $80.
And these are the actual replacement O2 sensors with the proper wires and
connectors, not the "generic, splice it in" type.

Don't speak too soon! This has been a process that reminds me that it
ain't fixed till it's fixed and we don't always know when that is.
Anyway, somebody may clear me to go buy an O2 sensor any minute now. I
looked and I don't have my old (suspected good) one.
