I just finished a swap in the other direction; replaced an aircooled tranny with a waterboxer unit. The aircooled transmission is only better if the slightly higher ring/pinion gearing (4.57 vs 4.86) is important to you. In many other aspects, like gear strength, smooth shifting, and availability of repair parts, I think the later waterboxer trannies are superior. -- Michael Snow 1982 Westfalia 1.9TD http://slowmachine82.blogspot.com/

Can anyone tell me the reason for this. What is the difference between my 2.1 and the aircooled transmission. I may have a chance to pick one up for future use and just wondering if it would be worth it. > > Cheers, Gerry > www.vanalong.com >
