Thanks John, I'm not sure HOW amused I'd be with a problem like that! Thanks for the link.

Actually, when I had to measure the shim thickness when I rebuilt my auto trans, I made one of the measurements (stupidly and three times) from the wrong place and finished up with a much thicker shim that I had expected. AT that point I simply had to put the job away and went without the vehicle for 3 months. When I got back to the job, I checked it again and of course, found the RIGHT place to make the measurement and that I did need a shim, but an appropriate one.

My reason for the question in the first place was that there is a cheap Type 2 transmission available locally and I wondered about grabbing it as a spare (though I would rather get an Audi 5000 one).
