We've all heard the stories about the vans that are hiding out there, just waiting to be rescued by a caring Vanagon nut.  A friend told me about two he's heard of, an aircooled Westy hit by a falling tree and a later camper just sitting there.  My wife came back from looking at a house to be auctioned with the report of a Westy parked around the corner from it.  Wow!
 
I looked at one of them this morning, one of the "friend" machines.  Looked up the owner's name/address and drove by on the way to work.  It's a brown '83 Westy with '05 tags.  Obviously been parked for a while, but in surprisingly good condition.  Shiny brown paint, a couple of dents and one teensy spot of seam rust, mossy poptop that needs new seals but good glass, tires and interior.  Only the contact paper wall panels are cracked and peeling.  I'd buy this thing in a heartbeat if I needed or wanted another.  Well, I do but that's a different story.
 
Anyway, if anyone is interested I would be glad to follow up on these finds.  The aircooled is likely only good for parts and no telling if the others are available.  Let me know.  It'll keep me from buying another one for myself.
