I am by no means an expert, but I believe the situation for diesel may stem from the fact that people can see diesel emissions (black smoke) and thus think that diesel is more "polluting".

Not to mention that most people think diesel fuel is smelly and greasy. But, even if Ford had been selling this car in the US, until recently they would have been just sitting on dealers lots while the monster SUVs and pick ups would have been flying off the lot. Jeff
