Some years ago I used this method temporarily when the struts failed on
my '84 7 passenger.  The downside, for me, was when "others" would try
to shut the hatch for me.  When at first they didn't succeed, they only
pulled harder.  It wasn't long after that that I put two heavy duty
struts on and left the pipes off.


What I'm really saying is ... be careful when others are around.
