Hi Roger, I didn't see where the guy said what type of vanagon it is......... but I assumed waterboxer...........if it is a waterboxer, there's no timing belt of course. But them diesels.............the t-belt is totally critical on those, of course.

One hint that it's likely a waterboxer is the dipstick part ........it goes right through the alternator belt on a wbxr. and is susceptible to the alt belt taking it out, evidently ! aloha, Scott
