Ok, my turn- I've been using GPS since 1996- when the first handhelds were available (about $700 as I recall). I was using the unit to plot the race courses on SF Bay, so when I entered a yacht race there, my GPS eliminated the confusion over the most demanding part of the race: calculating the currents and tides on the bay and its effect on my boat as I went from mark to mark. Won me races.

When a rope knocked my glasses in the Bay one night, I used the the GPS to get me home, steering by computer screen.

Later, when I started sailing down the coast and into Mexico, I tied the unit into digital charts (that was 1997).

I'm the "South of the Border" representative for NAVIMAQ navigation software.

I do not have a GPS for the Westy, but my Mac has programs for that, and I use a rechargeable (12v) Bluetooth unit. I'm installing an 8" flip down screen for a rearview backup camera, and will tie the NTSC video to my Mac for street navigation and dvd viewing for the passenger seat.

BTW, I'm ready to sell my business. 20 years is enough. See the thing at http://cochrans.com 5 months on, 7 months off.
