As a followup to my own question, A 90 degree turn with a pair of needlenose pliers gets them out of the holder; the same gets them back in. Thanks for everyones help on this. My local VW dealer did in fact have two bulbs in stock (I bought both of them). $2.49 each, which was a bargain compared to paying shipping & handling to order them online (the cheapest S & H I found was $6.99). Now, if one was ordering more than just the light bulbs at the same time, would be more cost effective that way. Being able to see how fast I'm going at night: priceless.
