You can move the needle on other than the earliest speedos, in my experience. It is a little tricky.

The Syncro has a set of speedo gears inside the front diff. These were available in various ratios to accommodate different tire sizes AND ring/pinion ratios. Changing the ring/pinion ratio directly affects the speedo on Syncros but has no effect on 2wd.
