Thanks everyone for all the input.Tomorrow I will drain out some of the oil to get it to the proper level. It is a Fram filter I am using but I have the identical filter on my 87 2.1 and have no problems so I dont think it would be the filter but maybe I have just been lucky with the 87. The brown wire was indeed frayed. I noticed that while I had the water pump off so I did splice a new section in with a solderless butt splice and a new crimp on spade connector. I dont know if there is any difference in resistance in the line or if that would make a difference but it did take more than 45 minutes of driving and the entire time I was bleeding the cooling system to sound off. Maybe I did just simply slosh the oil around and the pickup went empty for a second. I will give it another run around tomorrow after I drop the oil level a bit. The radio does indeed have a key symbol on the face. It is a stock original VW radio/cassette player. I will research the info about the codes. I have all the original paperwork for this vehicle including the original window sticker ($18,750) so maybe I can find something there. If anyone has any input to offer on the radio codes please let me know. Again thanks to all and I will update tomorrow after making the changes.

Thanks all,

A J
