Ah I misread the original post, I thought he said the radio would NOT turn on. Yes I forgot about the VW Code radios. On the one I had in my '91 Jetta, the dealer wrote the code on the top of the radio, might try sliding it out and looking around on the case to see if there's a 4-digit number written there.

Usually they say "Code" in the display when this happens, as I recall.
