Our qualifications for driving are so minimal. I don't recall ANY questions about the actual mechanical operation of a vehicle in the last written driving test I took. It was more about knowing things like the shapes and colors of road signs.

I'd guess that the number of drivers who took drivers education, AND paid attention, AND the curriculum covered things like what to do if your car overheats, or if any of the various warning lamps illuminate, or how to drive down a long grade without overheating your brakes, would be a surprisingly small number.

Most people, it seems, treat their car like a coffee maker. Pour fluid in the tank, turn it on, and it goes. That's about the extent of their knowledge (or the extent of what they care to know).
