You didn't say what year. Likely reason is that a capacitor inside the gauge has gone bad; it's replaceable with some fairly delicate soldering and drilling out the rivets on the gauge face. Could be the coolant-level control unit, in relay panel on new-type panels, up under left side of dash with old-type panels -- hard but not impossible to reach with dash in. Unit has 43 or 42 painted on it, removing it will check.
