Why indeed? So long as you keep the hoses away from potential hazards like the suspension or engine there shouldn't be any difference. There's no greater risk of heat or sharp edges to harm them. Also, trying to remove the original lines from their path over the tank proved impossible, as Frank said it might. They were held in place by one of those rubber grommet thingies somewhere out of reach, so I just sawed them off at the points before and after the tank and let them sit there, harmless.
