I call that the 'firewall fuel fitting' ......... there's no reason for that part to be on there. I usually bypass them if I have to think about or touch that part of a vanagon. it is common for the fuel line on the far side ( starter side ) of that fitting to leak where there is a crimp type hose clamp there that just doesn't do the job anymore.
