My fraternal Grandmother, who spoke to us in Castillian Spanish when we were kids, certainly did not use the "eye" the way they do in Latin America. She insisted only the "Indios" pronounced the "LL" that way. Don't worry she wasn't much of a bigot considering she a "Sino-Indio". Maybe she liked him because he also pronounced "LL" as "elye" (el-yeah) in the Castillian fashion.

As an example, they pronounced the word for horse, *caballo* as "kuh-bahl-yoh" vs. the Latin American ""kuh-bah-yoh". Nevermind that this was in Asia and nowhere near the Americas. In fact, the Spanish Colonist were never able to get the locals in this Asina (former) colony to say the word for horse in the Castillian fashion. The natives adopted the word to their local language. So *kabayo* is how Filipinos say spell and say their word for horse. No "L" there baby.
