You will lose some cooling capacity with R134a. From what I've read, the Vanagon AC system has capacity to spare, so it might not really be an issue, maybe unless you're in a really hot climate.

In other cars (e.g. Mercedes) where the cooling was barely adequate with R12, the R134a is not a good idea.
