Subject: testing radiator fan
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

On a long trip earlier this year, I noticed that the temperature gauge would go up and down based on whether I was moving. Since I was mostly moving, it was not a problem, but if I came off the highway and then had to stop at a traffic light the temperature would start to climb. Fortunately I was always able to get moving again before the temperature got too high.

Thinking back, I realized that I never heard the radiator fan come on during these episodes. Yet I knew the fan worked because it DID come on if I switched on the air conditioning.

So finally I checked the fuses and sure enough the radiator fan fuse was blown. I have a replacement, but I'd like to verify that something is not shorted in the circuit.

I exposed the thermo switch on the radiator, and removed the connector. There is a Red/White, Red/Black, and Red/Blue wire on the connector. What should I jumper to what to test the fan?

Thanks,

Allan -- 1991 Vanagon GL
