I had a pair of these that I found 'new-in-the-box' at a VW swapmeet for a good price years ago, and added them into my '84 GL 7-pass van. They are glued together and you could dremel-saw them apart. I doubt that you could 'easily' replace the bad speakers with something else, and I doubt that 4" would fit. Maybe 3"?
