I did this in 2006 with a non running 1987 syncro I bought essentially because it had a nearly new rebuilt locking rear diff / transmission. I rented a U-haul with a 4 wheels up auto tarnsport (because it is a syncro) and drove it to the border, walked in paid some tax, and left. Dead simple. Same experience with a 1973 Honda CB350 I got this summer in Michigan.

I have had people on various VW lists flail their arms and say "You must register at the border or else!", they COULD be right, but both times I have done it, I never did, and it was fast and painless. Both Crossings were at Sarnia / Port Huron.
