IIRC, two plastic tabs that are part of the lighter housing, hold it in place behind the dash. FWIW, when I had my dash apart, I found my ciggy socket was loose. I made a "washer" with bare solid #14 copper wire, and put one wrap around the assembly behind the outer flange. i.e. the copper pushes up against the outside of the dash. In my case, it took up the slack quite nicely. I rarely use it so can't speak to the longevity of the "fix" but see no reason why it won't last. Neil.
