I don't think one is especially 'superior' to the other.........just that
they are different, and feel differently from each other.
The factor of most 'cast iron lower control arm vanagons' also have power
steering, as adroitly mentioned by M.D., is noted !
many factors too.........tires being a major one.
when I put 205/70 R 14 tires onto my 85 Wolfsburg Weekender, it changed from
handling like a boat, to handling and steering like a sports car !
It's a power steering, cast lower control arms van, btw.
all fun !
