VAG has had lot's of problems with the 1.8T both with early timing belt failures(I've replaced 3 myself for customers) and also circa 98-99 with the 1.8T in the passats had major turbo failure problems due to oil line coking(replaced two turbos for customers) which lead to a TSB and now a class action suit since they not only misrepresented the problem, but didn't warranty repairs and mislead customers.. in the settlement they are paying out and extending warranties but still don't officially claim any responsibility or acknowledge an issue which makes me wonder why they think they are paying out... anyhow... their turbos are sized for pretty good low end, and 5 valves are great as long as they aren't kissing the pistons... but it is certainly below average when it comes to reliability. I agree about CR, they really can't be trusted. check out reliabilityindex.co.uk they are an aftermarket warranty company and they have engine only data for lot's of UK and US models, as well as brand data... and they aren't biased since their bottom line is directly tied to how accurate their reliability numbers are. It literally pays for them to get it right. Jim Akiba
