My '84 Vanagon Westy has front steel welded control arms and power
steering. They are not "sheet metal" but made form very thick pressed and
welded steel, much like rear control arms. There's nothing wimpy about
them. Granted, the cast iron pieces look very substantial and appear more
corrosion proof. Cast iron might be easier to manufacture as it does not
require an elaborate welding process on these small pieces.
So still no compelling evidence to upgrade, especially based on my driving
experience of 4 years each in an '85 and '84 Westy.
