One thing I failed to think of.

Maybe TJ is thinking of putting a 1.8T in a Vanagon.

I converted a Westy. Part of the annoyance was making the bed work out. Fortunately, the increase in height needed in the tub portion was almost exactly the same as the thickness of the Z bed foam. ~ 4".

Not sure how the 1.8T compares to the Jetta 2.0 in height though.....

Checking the oil is another part of the PITA, but I imagine one could set up another type of dip stick that is accessible from the Vanagon license plate hatch.
