Subject: Re: Engine Conversions

Hi,

I've been out in my I-4 gas motored 84 and am just catching up on email. I've never seen a "package deal" kit for the install of a Golf/rabbit/whatever motor into a van. If you have access to a diesel vanagon, you'll find everything (almost) already figured out for you, because the motors are almost identical. Neil's conversion is more complicated than simply following the diesel set-up but using a gas inline four, which are indeed available and cheap. Sticking a gas inline four in a vanagon is not difficult, more a bolt in. The fellow who did mine (he is a millwright/woodworker) did the whole thing in one day with no issues...well the "low coolant" blinker wasn't working..still isn't. I won't try to "sell" you this type conversion, but it certainly seems like the least complicated and least expensive option out there...if you have a basic knowledge of VWs and access to a diesel van or a set of parts for the conversion. Mine just did yet another 2500 miles round trip, no problems, excellent mileage and good highway speed. Don Hanson
