Subject: drain plugs - coolant - what now?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi, In attempting my first complete replacement of coolant for my 2.1 86 vanagon, Bentley points to the drain plugs between the pushrod tubes as the proper location to drain. These plugs are accessible after removing the nice shiny hex nuts for the equally shiny sheet metal covers. Problem is that here in Juneau, no fasteners survive under a 22 year old vanagon without massive rust, and sheet metal shields are anything but shiny. One of the four points that the shield is attached to, is the exhaust flange. The hex nuts are so rusted there, that I bypassed replacing that part of the exhaust system a few years ago.

Is there another way to drain the coolant? Thanks, Jeff Jeff Hartman Juneau, AK 86 vanagon
