Thanks for the suggestion, I did not check that, but it sounds like a useful test for the future.

I did check for resistance with an ohm meter on the filaments of the bulb and found that the low beam filament was showing an open circuit on both bulbs - visual inspection of the filament shows that it looks OK, however (but I'm assuming an ohm test is definitive). I'm assuming that both filaments in the bulbs should be showing no resistance, correct?
