I just want to add that the directions will work as stated ONLY with a completely stock system.
An example of not working would be trying to change the front shocks with after market springs installed, such as GoWesty progressives.
I use a very heavy duty Snap On clam shell like compressor to get the aftermarket springs in.
I have also seen Volks use metal load straps to keep the springs compressed when installing.
When you cut the straps you realize who much pressure the suspension is under.
Please be careful when working on these parts.

Vanagon does not use a McPherson type front suspension and the front
shocks are inside but separate from front springs.  You do not need a
spring compressor to change the shocks, front or rear.  The
instructions on the website are accurate.
