Wow, it may be too early for me to get that.

but to clarify... Aircooled 82 vanagon, gasoline, california, o2 unplugged, idle stabilizer plugged together, carbon canister removed and plugged Electronic ignition, Hall generator 5 AFTER TDC Timing scale destroyed. not present

>Can I accurately time an 82 vanagon

> >Using any special type of timing light or insturment

There are timing lights that let you dial in degrees of advance -- but you need retard, so you need to do two things:

BUT I AM LOOKING FOR ADVANCE SO I CAN USE A TIMING LIGHT OF THAT SORT? THERES A SCALE BUILT INTO THE DISPLAY OF THE LIGHT? YES?

WHAT IM REALLY TRYING TO DO IS SAVE SOME TIME GOING TO THE LOCAL SHOP AND ASKING HIM TO TIME MY VAN FOR ME SINCE HE HAS THE EQUIPTMENT AND I DONT ONLY FOR HIM TO CHUCKLE AT ME AND INFORM ME HE CANT DO IT WITHOUT A VW SCALE ON THE VAN

1) mechanically determine firing-stroke TDC on #1 cylinder, using a probe into the plug-hole. For check, the mark on the crank pulley should be in about the right place per the picture in Bentley. THAT I CAN DO

2) Mark that position in the place where the scale should be. STILL WITH YA

2a) :-) Measure or otherwise discover the circumference of the crank pulley, then calculate the distance (circumference / 72) represented by five degrees. Assuming the engine turns to the right, mark the crank pulley that distance to the left of the TDC mark. Now time using basic timing light, but matching the 5-degree mark to the case mark. IT WILL MAKE MORE SENSE IN THE PROCESS OF IT

Thanks Guys
