Air-cooled gasoline Vanagon I assume. the timing scale is on the fan housing, not the flywheel end. A regular timing light is used. electronic or points distributor ? if the points version............( not recommended ) , the points and dwell have to be adjusted correctly first of course. And the distributor not too worn.
