I had a used tranny put in my '85 4 years ago and the VW mechanic charged me $450 including labor. No problems and he said that if it ever fails he will replace it for the labor expense. I think it is a matter of trust in the person selling the used trans. It seems with all of the VW happenings in CT you should be able to find one easily. Try calling Jim's VW in Northport, ME. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edward Duntz" <eduntz@HOTMAIL.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Tuesday, October 21, 2008 8:39 PM Subject: Is there such a thing as a good used transmission?

It's a little premature to jump to a replacement transmission so soon, but I'm having some troubles. (1985 1.9 Vanagon Westfalia with manual trans.) The worst case scenario is that I have my mechanic pull my trans and send it to AA Transaxle. It'll be about four hours labor, plus Daryl's fee for rebuilding. That's a little more than I can afford right now. I imagine most would recommend against putting in a used trans, but what are the chances of getting a "known good" used trans?

I'll investigate a little more to see what the specific problem is, but I just want to look ahead if I need a whole new trans.
