This product was actually the inspiration for my project and mine wound up costing about the same by the time I was done.  I'd have preferred not to drill, but could not figure out in the time I had to do it how to mount the track otherwise.  Next van...

For those who prefer an off-the-shelf solution, or just don't want to drill
into their Vanagon, let me plug my $119 Ezy-Awning as an alternative.  Like
Stephen's finished product it is a dome awning, which prevents rain sag.
But it does not require you to drill into or modify your Vanagon in any way.
It simply clamps on when in use and stores under your seat when not.  Since
