my 2 cents on this subject is maybe half a dozen years ago when you found a
used trans there was a fair chance
it would be working properly ( not noisy, syncro's working well, no leaks,
etc ) .
These days.............since almost all you find are 20 + years old, or
very high mileage, like over 200,000..........
finding an actual good used one is less likely these days than it was.
I just sent in an 87 2WD 4 speed that was noisy in all gears for rebuidling.
I also sent in for cores, an 86 Westy 4 speed that functioned in all gears,
but was funky/weird/clunky shifting.........obviously something not right.
And a DK that worked but was noisy.
My goal was to get a rebuilt trans for the 87.
Of those 3, German Transaxle said only the 86 was rebuildable, and they gave
me core credit on the DK, and only partial core credit on the 87.
So ......yes, they are getting tired, and like VW engines.....
unless you know the age or history of it ...........you are kinda taking a
chance.
There is also the danger of running a funky/noisy one until it's not a
rebuildable care anymore.
